|Tree Planting Initiative Comes to Jersey City|
Jersey City Parks Coalition- JCPC- (which includes Riverview
Neighborhood Association) and the City of Jersey City recently announced
an initiative - "City Of Trees" to plant 2,020 trees in Jersey City by
the year 2020.
At the RNA monthly meeting on May 10th,
Representatives from the Jersey City Parks coalition will provide an
overview of the programs as part of the 'City Of Trees' tree planting
initiative orchestrated by the JCPC. Roger Heitmann, our treasurer
sits on the board of the JCPC and will lead this update. This
will include an introduction to a new tree mapping/reporting application
that is being made available to JC residents. Attend the meeting
to get information on this program and/or find out ways you can help.
|NJ Transit expands service on the 119.|
24 Hour Service Begins on June 25th.
Here is an update on upcoming expanded and adjusted service on the 119 bus line that will be effective in June. There
is certainly still much work to do regarding improving and expanding
bus service on the other lines in the Heights (87, 123, 86) but this is
major step in the right direction. We have been meeting with NJT,
County and City officials for the better part of three years and thanks
to the support and leadership of Mayor Fulop, Assemblyman Raj and others
(including the WPA) we have seen improvements in service reliability,
the addition of six trips added to both the 119 and 123 lines during
peak times and now the expansion of 119 service overnight. We
still see the need to make the 119 service to NYC more efficient and reliable,
this includes making the inbound/outbound flow at JSQ more efficient or
avoiding the JSQ terminal altogether. We will send out further
details on the new schedule as soon as we receive it from NJ
indicated, there is still much work to be done but we are moving in the
right direction towards comprehensive public transportation in the
Heights. The continued leadership of the Mayors office, our city council
and county/state representatives is crucial. Once the new
schedule is released, I ask that everyone spread the word so that the
expanded 119 service gets heavy ridership (this will make our case to
NJT that we need more expanded service on other lines and that the
demand is there). I also ask that everyone be vigilant in our
monitoring to make sure that the new service and schedule is reliable
and delivered as promised.
Below is the update from NJ Transit and the Mayor's Office:
1) Effective June 25, 2016, the #119 will begin
providing 24-hour service on weekdays and Saturdays, with overnight
frequencies operating every hour at some times, and approximately every 2
hours later in the overnight.
2) Issue of late morning 119 running late - Running time
will be added between various time-points to reflect observed
conditions and ensure bus arrivals better match the schedules. NJT will
also add recovery time between trips to improve service reliability and
significantly upgrade on-time performance. Consequently, during
the midday off-peak period,
service will be scheduled to operate every 40 minutes (instead of every
30 minutes) to reflect the running time/recovery time expansions.
3) Since the #119 now provides midday service on Central
Avenue on weekdays and Saturdays, there is no longer a need to continue
diverting selected midday #88 trips from JFK Boulevard to serve Central
Avenue. The diversion had been implemented when there was no
midday #119 service available. At this point, the diverted #88
service to Central Avenue is duplicative and will be restored to its
original routing, via JFK Boulevard. However, on Sundays, when the
#119 service does not operate, NJT will continue to divert selected #88
trips via Central Avenue.
