Gazebo Project - Winter slow down

The reconstruction of the Riverview Park Gazebo, destroyed during SuperStorm Sandy, finally began at the end of October.  To date, the base of the old gazebo has been demolished, the site cleared, the foundation and walls of the new gazebo have been poured and utilities have been brought to the site. They have also started work on the pathway that will lead up to the gazebo.

Gazebo construction may be halted due to snow and freezing temperatures.
We will share any additional updates at Tuesday's meeting and continue to provide updates on Facebook/social media and our website.

RNA Awarded Grant for Live Concert Series

RNA has been awarded almost $6,000 in Hudson County Local Arts Programming (LAP) grant funds,  the RNA Live Music Series that will incorporate both Live at the Lumberyard events and music/art events along Historic Holland St.  We would like to extend special thanks to board secretary Jocelyn Patrick for her hard work on this successful grant application.

LumberYard

The Lap Grant is a matching funds grant so RNA will need to raise an equal amount in in-kind and cash contributions. We will need to raise these funds to be able to increase the number of events and bring in more diverse musicians, artists and performers. Please contact us at riverviewneighborhood@gmail.com if you would like to contribute, help us raise funds or apply for additional grants.

Riverview Art District in JC Heights Receives National Community Arts Grant

In case you missed the announcement of this prestigious award - we are reprinting the press release from December 2016 below.

The Kresge Foundation, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, has selected the Riverview Arts District (RAD) and New Jersey Community Capital (NJCC) for a technical assistance grant to facilitate Creative Placemaking in the JC Heights. The RAD is one of only nine community and municipal service organizations in the country selected for the Creative Placemaking Grant.  The grant will be used to help RAD stakeholders and NJCC fuse arts, culture and design with urban planning and community development activities to provide, amongst other things, affordable housing, arts community centers and live-work artist spaces.

The RAD community established its roots in the early 1980's when a significant number of artists relocated to the Heights from Downtown Jersey City and Hoboken. Since the RAD establishment, these artists and other engaged residents formed various groups over the past several years that collaborate to provide community art events and spaces.  In support of these artists and community groups, the City of Jersey City not only mapped the RAD but eventually amended the City's Zoning Ordinance to allow "the right to establish artist studios and live-work environments".

"We hope to leverage this opportunity to do many things, but especially to create properties that provide affordable housing options in our neighborhood and also grow the RAD and its art community. The grant will also allow for more strategic collaboration among the various neighborhood & arts-oriented organizations that currently exist in and nearby the RAD," said RAD members involved in the Creative Placemaking grant process. "The Riverview Arts District exists to support the growing community of artists in the Heights who help make Jersey City the special place that it is today. This grant will expand our capacity to do just that," said Mayor Steven Fulop.

Based in Detroit, Michigan, The Kresge Foundation is a $3.6 billion private, national foundation that works to expand opportunities in America's cities through grantmaking and social investment in arts and culture, education, environment, health, human services and community development.

Full House at This Year's Holiday Party

Holiday Party 2016 An annual event for dozens of years, RNA hosted its Holiday Party in lieu of the December meeting. This year's party was one of the best attended parties in many years.  Members and friends, including new neighbor Mayor Fulop, enjoyed delicious food from our sponsor Patsey's and great desserts brought by many guests. (thank you to all that brought desserts to share).  It was great to meet new residents and spend time reconnecting with long time residents.  We also elected the 2016 RNA board members for another one year term.
