Greetings!

Please join us on Tuesday evening, July 11th at 7:30PM for our monthly meeting at the Harborview Health Center, 178 Ogden Ave at Franklin St - 1st Floor Cafeteria.

In addition to the opportunity to hear from and bring issues to the attention of a representative from the Jersey City Police Department North District and from the Residence Response Center, we will be discussing and providing an update on the Riverview Park renovations, and the dog run at the southern end of Ogden Ave (Tumulty Park).  We will also be discussing possible Palisade Ave Zoning adjustments that the planning department is discussing with RNA and other Heights groups with the goal of reducing the amount of variance applications for the R2 Zone (Palisade between South and Ferry St).

All are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Zoning Board hearing for 520 Palisade Ave (old firehouse) on Thursday July 20th

The public hearing on the zoning application for 520 Palisade Ave (Old Firehouse), originally scheduled for last month, will now be held this Thursday, July 20th at 6:30PM.

The revised plans have 17 units and 10 parking spaces with a 2000 sq ft retail space, the addition on the rear of the building goes up to 75 feet, the rear balconies have been removed and replaced with a roof deck, the bulkheads for roof access rise up to 89 feet.  RNA members voted to not oppose this development application but to defer to the neighbors within 200ft of the building.

The Zoning Board Meeting is Thursday July 20th, 6:30pm at City Hall - 280 Grove Street in the Council Chambers.  It's especially critical for neighbors within 200 feet to attend the meeting to get on the record and for the opportunity to influence the board's vote.  You MUST attend in-person to officially support or oppose this variance request.

Riverview Park Gazebo Re-opens

Almost five years since the original Gazebo in Riverview Fisk Park was destroyed during SuperStorm Sandy, construction of a new Gazebo was completed, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held on June 23rd, and the Gazebo is now open for public enjoyment!

The RNA Board worked tirelessly over the past five years to ensure that a new Gazebo met the needs of the community and was funded and completed.  The RNA Board wishes to thank the mayor, city council, JC architecture, Jersey City Parks Coalition, and the following key individuals from the community: Kern Weissman, Lee Levine, Roger Heitmann, Becky Hoffman and all the Heights residents that provided input into the designs.  Check out the article on the new gazebo and the opening ceremony from the Hudson Reporter.

The newly constructed Gazebo is ADA accessible, includes seating along the pathway, lighting and storage as well as new landscaping and bathrooms which will be opened during events.

RNA submitted an application to name the renovated area after Maria Tuzzo, a longtime board member, resident and volunteer extraordinaire who passed away in 2011.  The application has been approved by the City Council sub-committee that reviews naming applications and will be before the City Council for approval this summer. RNA hopes to hold the naming ceremony at the Annual Park Fest and Flea Market in September.

Pilot program begins along Palisade Ave

As part of a pilot program to see how effective they are for holding trash and recyclables, new waste receptacles have been installed along Palisade Ave. In return for providing the new receptacles that can hold trash, bottles/cans and newspaper recycling, the vendor will sell advertising that will be displayed on the sides the units.  The pilot will be used to measure the effectiveness of this advertising model as well as whether the receptacles are well utilized and reduce litter in our neighborhood.  The city will also gauge the level of maintenance provided by the vendor.  Thanks to United for Clean Streets (RNA is a member) for working with the city to get this pilot program started.
