Greetings and happy new year!

Please join us on Tuesday evening, January 8th at 7:30PM for our monthly meeting at the Harborview Health Center, 178 Ogden Ave at Franklin St - 1st Floor Cafeteria. There will be a representative from the JC Police Department on hand to listen to any concerns.

At this meeting, we will review and help the board determine priorities for the year as well as establish our 2019 committees.  This is the best meeting to attend to get involved or to influence the RNA board's 2019 programming and advocacy efforts. We will also have a number of updates regarding development and zoning in the neighborhood.

All are welcome and encouraged to attend.

RNA 2018 Activity Recap and Accomplishments

-Helped implement the new R2-D zone along Palisade Ave (between Ferry St and Congress St) that that was a culmination of years of work between the community and the Jersey City Planning Department.  This ordinance fixed multiple defects and ambiguities that were present in the R2 ordinance that would have allowed unlimited height and density for proposed mixed use buildings.

-Working with the Statuary, John Mathews and our new corporate sponsor Nokia Bell Labs, we significantly expanded the Vault Allure programming at Historic Holland St. RNA and The Statuary held three Vault experiences incorporating music, performance, art, and technology. These events were provided to the community with no entry fees. We hope to continue and expand the series in 2019

-Worked with the city to complete the Tumulty Park Dog Run at the south end of Ogden Ave. This project helped remove dogs from Janet Moore playground.

-Started working with the city and other community groups to update the R1 zoning ordinance in the Heights to discourage curb cuts, disincentivize demolitions, preserve on-street parking and incentivize restoration and expansion of existing buildings.

-The Transportation Committee, headed by Roger Heitmann, began efforts to holistically improve bus transportation in the Heights by creating a petition campaign gathered over 600 signatures and organizing meetings with NJT and our elected officials.

-Oversaw and worked through many proposed development projects in the Heights. Worked with developers, neighbors, and the city to improve the projects and lower the negative impact on the Heights community.

-Co-produced, with James Ruggia, a full year of monthly poetry and spoken word events at the Fox and Crow. We will continue this series in 2019

-Held the Flea Market and Park Festival in Riverview Park with over 80 vendors.

-Continued to expand the Ogden's End Community garden and programming

-Continued to advocate and work with the city on the Riverview Park renovation, which will start in 2019.

-Sponsored the RNA Skyline Stage at the Riverview Jazz Fest closing festival event in Riverview Park --Thank you RJO!

-Coordinated with the JCPC to get 18 new street and park trees planted this fall around Riverview Park and Palisade Ave. --Thank you Roger!

Introducing the RNA Board for 2019

RNA is a 100% volunteer run organization and our annual election for the board of directors was held on Tuesday, December 11th.

One major change - Kern Weissman decided to step down as president after dedicating the past four years to volunteering in this capacity and guiding us through a time of significant change in our neighborhood. He previously served as the Vice President for 5 years.  Kern will continue to serve on the development/planning and events committees at least through 2019.

The RNA board members for 2019 are:

Brian Rans - President
Open - Vice President
Roger Heitmann - Treasurer
Jocelyn Patrick - Secretary
Lauren Freestone - Director at Large

If you would like to serve as Vice President or any other board position, please email the board at riverviewneighborhood@gmail.com.  Also email if you want to be included on our 2019 volunteer list to be notified of volunteer opportunities.

Proposed 10 Unit Development at 268 New York Ave is before the Zoning Board on 1/10

An application for a 4-Story, 10 Unit development at 268 New York Ave will be heard by the Jersey City Board of Adjustment (zoning board) on Thursday, January 10th at 6:30PM at City Hall - 280 Grove St.  The developer, along with his attorney and architect, appeared at a special meeting on 1/3 and presented the project to the RNA membership.  After discussing the matter and asking questions, the RNA membership voted to oppose the project, unless the developer created an affordable and/or artist live-work unit.

Anyone interested in this application - whether in favor or opposed - should attend this meeting on Thursday 1/10 6:30pm at City Hall and voice their opinion.
